Animal Shelter Dioramas

The Need For Shelter
This term, Stage 1 have been learning about different types of shelter. The students have explored and investigated both the natural and built shelters of humans, animals and plants and how these shelters vary depending on the type of environment they live in.
As a culmination of the unit the students were then involved in a design project that involved making a 3D model of an animal shelter or habitat. Students were required to plan their design, keeping in mind some of the challenges that the animal may face - such as pollution or deforestation.
Students were asked to think about the materials they could use to create their model and the process involved in its creation. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience and produced some outstanding results across the stage. Here are our students creating some of their wonderful animal habitats...

Harmony Day 2017 - 'Everyone Belongs'

Harmony Day was celebrated with an assembly and the unveiling of the Storylines mural which is a symbol of harmony in our school.
Uncle Perry and the Callaghan College Didgeridoo Group performed during the unveiling of the mural.
We are very grateful to Mrs Sutcliffe and Mrs Belfield for all their hard work creating this spectacular mural which every student and staff member had a part in producing.
All students participated with enthusiasm by wearing their national costumes or the colour orange - the colour of Harmony Day.
At Belair Public School everyone belongs.

Athletics Carnival

On Monday Stage 1 students had a fun day participating in age races and rotating novelty activities which included vortex throwing, the parachute, tug-o-war, ball games, relays and the good old egg and spoon race!
We concluded the day with a tug-o-war challenge between the Year 1 and Year 2 parents. The Year 1 parents were victorious.
Thank you to everyone who came along and supported the day.

Learning About Shelters

Year 1 students were very fortunate last Friday to have Abigail Zwart (Bodie's Mum) talk to us about architecture and building shelters. Our H.S.I.E topic this term is 'The Need For Shelter'.

Abigail is a talented architect and she created a fantastic presentation that featured buildings from different cultures. We learnt about what materials are used for building and how architects design buildings for a purpose. We looked at building designs to suit different purposes and the importance of sustainability when building shelters. Year 1 students saw examples of solar panels and batteries used in houses. Year 1 students were a fantastic audience. They listened to what Abigail talked about and asked some thoughtful questions. Classes wrote about the talk and some students even went home doing their own drawings of houses!

Stage One- 'Brain Play'

Albert Einstein said play is the highest form of research.
Our Stage One students spend an hour of play each Friday. Some of the activities are pretend shops, building, creating shelters, 'schools,' dress ups, 'vet clinics' and lego construction plus many more! We call it 'brain play' as students are building their oral language, problem solving skills and critical and creative thinking skills. Students learn to negotiate and work collaboratively as a group. It is also fun as you can see from the following photos.
